Physical Chemistry

(Åbo Akademi University)

Jouko Peltonen
Professor

The main research area of the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry is surface and colloid (nano) chemistry, with a strong focus on materials chemistry. Our aim is to accumulate a thorough molecular understanding of processes related to these fields. The application areas include energy technology, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, pulp and paper technology, as well as the design of functional materials. Therefore all the steps in the value chain, i.e. synthesis – functionalization – characterization – application, are integrated in our research strategy.

Furthermore, our aim is to develop predictive thermodynamic and theoretical models providing support for evaluation of the experimental observations. The ultimate goal is therefore to be able to identify the predominant criteria controlling application-related materials design, and to verify these criteria by material bottom-up synthesis approaches. These aims are supported by a broad range of state-of-the-art instrumentation available at the laboratory, including e.g. scanning probe microscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD/SAXS/XRR) and thermogravimetry (TG-FTIR-MS).
